What I’m Packing for San Diego: Mixing Patterns, Neutrals, and Easy Travel Style
Packing for a trip always makes me think about patterns, textures, and color in the same way I think about styling a room. When everything works together, getting dressed becomes effortless. For this trip to San Diego, I’m building my suitcase around a simple color palette and a few patterns I love: stripes, leopard, and polka dots.
The goal is to feel classic and relaxed, but still have a little twist. I’m leaning into neutrals like cream, navy, black, and green, then adding small moments of personality through texture, pattern, and a few fun accessories.
When everything shares a similar palette, you can mix pieces easily and still look pulled together.
Start with a Simple Color Palette
For this trip, I’m building outfits around:

Keeping the base colors simple makes it easy to mix patterns and textures without things feeling chaotic. It also means fewer pieces can create more outfits, which is always the goal when packing.
Mix Patterns That Still Feel Classic
The patterns in my suitcase are simple but interesting.

These work well together because they all have strong graphic shapes and mostly neutral colors. A striped tee with trouser pants, a polka dot jacket layered over basics, or a leopard piece paired with neutrals keeps things interesting without feeling overdone.

Even when the colors are simple, texture adds dimension.
For this trip I packed:
• a black open knit sweater
• a soft neutral sleeveless knit
• structured trousers
• light cotton dresses
These textures make simple outfits feel more styled without needing a lot of extra pieces.

Instead of packing a lot of clothes, I like adding personality through accessories.
This trip’s highlights:

• red flats
• army green flats

These small details add color and character while still working with the neutral palette.
Easy Day to Night Pieces
I always like packing pieces that work in multiple ways.
A sundress with sneakers is perfect for exploring during the day, and swapping to flats instantly makes it dinner ready.
The same idea works with trousers and a striped tee. Casual during the day, but with the right shoes and jacket it feels polished enough for evening.

One of my favorite things about getting dressed is that the same styling ideas work in interiors too. Start with a cohesive palette, mix patterns that share a visual rhythm, and add texture for interest. Whether you’re styling an outfit or a room, those simple principles make everything feel intentional and pulled together.
San Diego style tends to lean relaxed and effortless, which makes it the perfect place to play with these combinations.
