What Your Favorite Pattern Says About Your Style
Florals, stripes, leopard, or a little bit of everything? Your favorite patterns might say more about your personal style than you think.
I've always been a pattern girl. Give me a beautiful vintage rug, a classic stripe, an interesting floral, or a playful polka dot, and I'm interested.
But here's what I find so fascinating about pattern. It's incredibly personal.
The things we're drawn to often reflect something about us. Maybe it's something we love, something we're feeling, or even something we want to feel. A pattern can be nostalgic, playful, comforting, confident, or completely unexpected.
And while I don't think your favorite pattern can define your entire personality, I do think it can offer a little glimpse into your style.
So, what does your favorite say about you?
Florals: The Romantic
There's something inherently sweet and romantic about a floral.
Maybe you're drawn to delicate blooms and soft colors, or perhaps you love an oversized botanical print with a little more personality.
To me, florals are also one of the most approachable ways to introduce pattern into a space. They feel familiar, which makes them a great starting point for someone who isn't quite ready to embrace something bolder.
But don't mistake approachable for boring. A floral can feel traditional, modern, whimsical, or sophisticated depending on the colors, scale, and what you pair it with.
Your style says: You appreciate beauty in the details, and you're not afraid of a little romance.
Stripes & Plaids: The Classic
If you're drawn to stripes and plaids, there's a good chance you appreciate a classic.
These are patterns that have been around forever, and for good reason. They're timeless, versatile, and have a way of making almost anything feel a little more pulled together.
They can lean preppy or traditional, but I think the fun really begins when you play with color or pair them with something unexpected.
A classic plaid in an unusual color combination? Suddenly it feels fresh. A traditional stripe alongside a loose, expressive floral? So much more interesting.
Your style says: You love a good foundation, but you know classic doesn't have to mean predictable.
Animal Prints: The Confident One
Animal prints are interesting because I think they can say completely different things depending on who's using them.
For some, leopard is bold and adventurous. For others, it's practically a neutral.
And honestly, I think both are right.
Picture a leopard print rug paired with a traditional plaid. It can feel surprisingly classic and collected. Now imagine that same leopard mixed with a vibrant floral. Suddenly the whole look feels a little more daring.
That's what I love about animal prints. They can be as understated or as expressive as you want them to be.
Your style says: You appreciate a little personality, and you don't necessarily need everyone else to understand your choices.
Abstracts & Geometrics: The Creative Spirit
Unexpected shapes, interesting color combinations, playful dots, and expressive patterns always make me think of creative people.
People who aren't afraid to experiment. People who find joy in things that are a little different.
There's often a sense of movement and energy to these patterns, and I love that they don't always need to be perfectly structured or predictable.
They can make a space feel happy, artistic, and full of life.
Your style says: You like to have fun with design and don't take everything too seriously.
And If You Love Them All?
Well, welcome to my world.
I've never been someone who feels the need to choose just one type of pattern. I love mixing them, and I think it's one of the most interesting ways to create a space that feels truly personal.
What's funny is that my own approach has changed over the years.
When I was younger, I was probably a little bolder with my pattern choices. I loved contrast and combinations that made a statement.
I still love those looks, but these days I'm finding myself drawn to something a little quieter.
Softer colors. Muted tones. Sketchy florals. Watercolor effects. Patterns that feel a little less stark and a little more effortless.
I'm actually mixing more patterns and textures than ever, but somehow the overall result feels calmer, more neutral, and more elevated.
And I love that.
I think that's one of the best things about developing your personal style. You start to understand how to bring different elements together in a way that feels natural, even when the individual pieces might seem completely unrelated.
It's not necessarily about being more restrained. It's about becoming more intentional.
The Best Pattern Is the One You Love
Here's what I hope you'll take away from all of this.
Your style doesn't have to make sense to everyone.
Maybe you love bold, colorful patterns that make a statement. Maybe you're happiest with soft neutrals and barely-there texture. Maybe you're somewhere in between, or maybe your taste changes every other Tuesday.
All of it is okay.
I think we sometimes get so caught up in what's trending, what goes together, or what someone else might think that we forget the whole point of personal style.
It's supposed to be personal.
So mix the floral with the plaid. Add a little leopard. Keep everything soft and tonal if that's what feels right. Or skip pattern altogether if it's just not your thing.
Trust your instincts. Have fun with it. And most importantly, be yourself.
Because if it's your style, it isn't wrong.
