Style Your Day Like an Outfit: How I’m Getting Out of a Style Rut

Style Your Day Like an Outfit: How I’m Getting Out of a Style Rut

Lately, I have been thinking about getting dressed a little differently.

Not in a big, dramatic way. Not with a full wardrobe overhaul or trying to reinvent my style. But in a quieter, more intentional way that actually fits into my everyday life.

I recently listened to a podcast that talked about asking yourself one simple question when you get dressed in the morning.

How do I want to feel today?

And it stuck with me.

Because if I am being honest, working from home has definitely put me in a bit of a style rut. I do not have the same daily reason to get dressed the way I used to, and a lot of times I default to whatever is easiest. Comfortable, casual, simple. Which is fine, but it does not always make me feel like myself.

And that is really the difference.

I love fashion. I love style. I love the little details that make an outfit feel pulled together. But somewhere along the way, I stopped reaching for those details as often as I used to.

So instead of asking what I should wear, I started asking how I want to feel.

The Three Words I Keep Coming Back To

When I really thought about it, there are three ways I always want to feel when I get dressed.

Pulled together
Not overdressed, not complicated, just intentional. Earrings on. A front tuck. Something that makes me feel like I tried, even if it only took a minute.

Effortless
This is important for my lifestyle right now. I want to feel comfortable and relaxed, but still good. Wide leg pants, soft layers, pieces that move easily through the day.

Chic
This is the piece that keeps everything from feeling flat. A great bag, a pair of sunglasses, fun shoes. Something that adds a little personality and makes the outfit feel like me.

None of this is about doing more. It is about being a little more thoughtful with what I am already wearing.

Getting Dressed, But Simpler

Once I started thinking this way, everything felt easier.

Instead of overthinking an outfit, I just match it to how I want to feel.

If I want to feel pulled together and effortless, I reach for wide leg pants, a tee, a front tuck, and sneakers.

If I want to feel a little more chic, I might swap in a maxi skirt, add sunglasses, or grab a better bag.

It is not about changing everything. It is about adjusting one or two details.

And that small shift makes a bigger difference than you would think.

Bringing This Into My Home

What I did not expect is how naturally this translated into my home.

The same question applies.

How do I want my space to feel today?

Pulled together might mean a quick reset, clearing a surface, or styling one small area.

Effortless might mean softer lighting, turning on a lamp instead of overhead lights, and letting things feel relaxed but still intentional.

Chic might be adding one styled detail, a stack of books, a tray, a little moment that makes the space feel finished.

It is the same idea. Small changes, thoughtful details, and creating a feeling rather than chasing perfection.

A Small Shift That Changes Everything

I think what I am realizing is that style is not about having more or doing more.

It is about paying attention.

To how you want to feel
To what makes you feel like yourself
To the small details that bring it all together

And whether it is getting dressed or styling your home, that intention is what makes everything feel a little more elevated, a little more personal, and a lot more you.

So lately, instead of asking what I should wear, I am asking how I want to feel.

And then building from there.

Simple, intentional, and a little more me.
