5 Places You Can Add Pattern Without Committing to Wallpaper
I love pattern. Florals, stripes, dots, plaids. If you've followed me for any amount of time, that probably isn't a surprise.
But here's the thing: not everyone is ready to wallpaper an entire room.
The good news? You don't have to.
Some of my favorite spaces use pattern in smaller, more unexpected ways. These details add personality, color, and interest without requiring a major commitment.
Here are five of my favorite places to add pattern.
1. Doors
Let's start with the most unexpected one.
Doors are often overlooked, but they're one of the largest blank surfaces in a home. Adding pattern to a door instantly creates interest and can make a room feel more custom and intentional.
It's a small change that makes a surprisingly big impact. My door detail strips are the perfect thing to add pattern to a door.
2. Throw Pillows
If you're pattern curious, throw pillows are one of the easiest places to start.
Mix florals with stripes, geometric prints with solids, or layer different scales of pattern to create a collected look.
The best part? They're easy to swap out whenever you're ready for a refresh. I share more ideas in this blog post.
3. Lampshades
A patterned lampshade can completely change the personality of a room.
Whether you choose a subtle block print or a bold floral, it's a simple way to add character without overwhelming a space.
4. Art and Frames
Pattern doesn't always have to come from fabric or wallpaper.
Artwork, colorful mats, and decorative frames can introduce pattern while also helping to tie a room together.
Think of it as layering visual interest rather than decorating with a single statement piece.
5. Window Treatments
Curtains and roman shades are another great way to introduce pattern without committing to an entire wall.
A striped drape, a soft floral, or a playful geometric print can become the perfect finishing touch.
The Secret to Using Pattern
The key to decorating with pattern isn't using more of it. It's using it intentionally.
A few thoughtfully placed details often create more impact than covering an entire room.
So if you've been wanting to experiment with pattern but aren't quite ready for wallpaper, start small. You might be surprised how much personality a few well-chosen details can add.
